Hello,

Thomas Mitchell here with a request for assistance and support as we march forward into 2009 with increased awareness of the plight of young Liberians who so desperately seek regular schooling and higher education facilities that many other countries take for granted. Hence the need for sponsorship for a scholarship program and the reason for this letter to you today.

Education remains a serious problem facing post conflict Liberia. Prior to the civil uprising, approximately sixty percent of Liberia's population was illiterate and many, especially rural dwellers had little access to education. As a result of the civil war, many school structures were destroyed and many young people, mostly teens did not have access to school for more than a decade.

At present the illiteracy rate in Liberia has increase miserable mostly amongst children, teens and young people. The government is making an attempt to help the situation, initiated free education at the primary level but the lack of school buildings, classrooms and teachers serves as serious impediment to its efforts. At present there are growing numbers of kids being denied the right to school. They are in ghettos and street corners and some are bread winner for their family. Liberia is slowly perishing, because these teens form part of our future if the situation is not address soon, as faced risk of returning to our recent past (war, social, economic and political instability). The responsibility cannot be left with government alone; it must take our collective effort to address this problem.

In an effort to help address the educational problem we have designed the "Child Literacy Program Initiative". This program is a grass root effort in communities that teaches kids who are in and out of school basic reading and writing skills. Youths volunteer some of their leisure time, and commit their time to kids in the community in an informal setting and help those kids learn how to read and write. This literacy program has been successful over the past few years, as many kids learned the basis skills (reading and writing), and as a result some are presently in schools. But this program needs resources to continue as the lack of resources has slow down the continuation of the program over the months.

Many of the participants in the Child Literacy Program Initiative were less fortunate children. Not only are they not in schools but they cannot also afford basic school resources (copybooks, textbooks, pencils, etc). As such there is a need that serious attention be given to this situation to encourage them to go to school. We appeal for assistance for many less fortunate children in the form of scholarship to help paid their tuition, copybook, textbook, etc. It is our hope that we can be supported in saving our perishing nation.
